I believe that experience is important in our life. We believe that our next breath will give us air and that food satisfies our hunger. We do not believe that we soon will be transformed to a flying parakeet. Should we seriously doubt the value of experience, our existence would be seriously threatened.

The importance of experience is nevertheless denied at many university courses in Philosophy of Science. Here I try to discuss experience based and theoretical considerations that validate or disclaim such a denial.

Are studies of our perceived reality meaningless?

During a course in communication at Lund's University, a fairly large part of the course was about philosophy of science, or rather about an antiscientific outlook of life.

Instead of treating the limits of knowledge, which is a very interesting area, the theme was that one of the tools we use to approach knowledge - science - had a lot of deficiencies.

It was aiming for the pianist, but shot at the piano.

The conclusion from the course was that it is fair to claim things without experience and without studies from what we call reality. This is of course a common situation during private discussions, but my opinion is that students during courses at university level should be able to obtain a better analysis of the borders of our knowledge.

Similar education seems to be held at other Swedish institutions in the name of "Scientific method" or "Philosophy of Science".

Bridge between two cultures

The expression "the two cultures" describes one culture that acknowledges "knowledge" and one culture that renounce it. Within these cultures both philosophically valid and invalid arguments are used that are heavily dependent on the lack of definitions of various concepts.

A common opinion is that it is very hard to build a bridge between these two cultures, but due to it´s importance I still want to make an attempt. Experiences are important, and they need to be scrutinized.

The bridge is built through definitions of concepts and investigations of the logic and experience based presumptions for the two cultures.

Better to build a bridge, than to watch two groups draw each other down into the abyss!

The bridgeheads are on both sides constructed from a logically valid and reality anchored skepticism about dogmatic statements, that is known since the Greek antiquity and is a part of scientific methodology.

On such a bridge it is hoped that relativists and those affirming knowledge may meet and exchange valuable insights about knowledge and experience.
